This illustration paints the growth and evolution of the artist as a long journey over large hills. Every drawing and sketch that we make is like a footstep we leave on the ground, inching us closer and closer to where we want to be as artists. The character looks back on all the drawings he's made because he's proud of where they have taken him. Even as he does this, a new paper is appearing under his feet. His clothes contain many references to tools that artists use (graphics tablet pen, pencil, palette, etc.). I chose to depict digital and traditional tools simultaneously because in my own journey, both have been vital to my growth as an artist. Each of the drawings that the character leaves behind contain the same thumbnail sketches that I made while planning out this drawing. I wanted to show how our ideas grow and evolve as we plan them out. They are also ordered in such a way that they seem to depict a character climbing a mountain made of papers. Climbing a mountain is often used as a metaphor for growth in many creative fields, and having the mountain be made of paper references all the drawings we artists have to make to improve. To sum up, this drawing depicts my own journey as an artist; how I've grown and evolved. Every drawing that I've made has led me to this point. Even this drawing I am submitting here is another step in my never-ending journey to improve.
