My artwork depicts the process of self-growth with the aid of a plant as a visual metaphor. The seed of a plant represents potential for flourishing growth. I have mirrored this image with the curled up position of the girl on the ground. The seed continues to grow and it evolves into a mature, flourishing plant. People experience a similar evolution of the inner self. As we embark on the journey from birth to adulthood, we are continually growing emotionally and psychologically. This eventually culminates in the discovery of the true self and promises a sense of freedom. I have captured this with the open body language of the final figure. Self-growth is a nuanced progression that is often invisible to the outside world. I have therefore chosen to place the subject against a solid blue background to let the simplicity focus one’s attention on the girl. This provides an intimate view of her vulnerability and her experience, and it eliminates distraction that could contribute to masking this self-growth process.
