Amazonian Afrofuturism, created by me, Gabriel Cardoso (GC), represents futures where Black people from the Amazonian territory create and think artistically, drawing from their own culture, identity, history, and tradition. Many of these futures stem from five pillars:Carimbó, a musical rhythm and dance created by Black people, blending their culture with Indigenous culture.Cabanagem, the only popular revolution that came to power in Brazil, which was only possible with the support of the Black and Indigenous population. The Aparelhagens, which emerged between the 1940s and 1950s in the outskirts of Belém. I dare say this is where Amazonian Afrofuturism truly began. The Encantados and their stories, which are a major inspiration for my work. I am constantly representing these characters in my art.The outskirts of Belém, particularly in my case, the Jurunas. The neighborhood where I was born and raised, and from where many of my ideas originated. The place where my works found space and materialized as Afrofuturist pieces.Without a doubt, these are the five pillars of my Amazonian Afrofuturism, where my references arise directly from the origins of my culture. Additionally, I make a point of highlighting that Amazonian Afrofuturism was born in the outskirts of Belém do Pará, through music, history, art, culture, and technology.
