Day 24 — Water Spirit The valley eventually opened into an old canal village, where quiet houses leaned over slow, glassy water. Matteo walked carefully along the stone edge… until the ground slipped beneath his foot. Splash! He fell straight into the canal. The water hissed when it touched his burning face, steam curling upward like pale ghosts. Matteo panicked, waving his arms as the flame on his head flickered wildly. Then the water began to move. From the far side of the canal, a tall figure stepped silently across the surface — the Water Spirit. A calm guardian with a straw hat and a long sword, its blue form flowing like a river itself. It watched Matteo quietly. The flame-boy struggled, half frightened, half relieved by the cool water softening the around his face. The Water Spirit slowly lowered its sword. With a gentle motion, the water lifted Matteo instead of drowning him, holding him like careful hands. The steam faded. The flame dimmed, becoming calmer, steadier. The spirit seemed satisfied. Matteo floated there, blinking in surprise. Perhaps the world of spirits wasn’t trying to burn him, scare him, or test him. Maybe… It was trying to teach him how to live with the fire.
