I prefer drawing the head using two overlapping circles instead of a triangle or a square. It makes placing the ears and eyes much simpler, especially since I don't use the exact same alignment for every design. For the side profile, I use the same head structure as a base and simply add a small protrusion for the nose and chin. After that, I just let the rest flow into my own style. Heres a little example below.
