One idea I wanted to share is how style (particularly hairstyles and clothing) can be one of the strongest visual clues for communicating character's age and gender. These details can make character's identity understandable even when the viewer is only looking at their head/bust.

For this study, I drew the same little girl at three different stages of her life: as a child, an adolescent, and an adult. I kept the overall hairstyle relatively similar across all three versions to make it clear that they are the same person, while still making the hairstyle distinct enough to reflect each stage of her life.

As a child, she has short, cute, uncut locks, giving her a youthful and innocent appearance. As an adolescent, her hair has grown longer and become more rebellious, with uneven spikes and a slightly unkempt look that reflects her teenage years. As an adult, her hair is the longest and most elegant of the three, creating a more mature and composed appearance.

To show different styles of clothing I chose collars, to reinforce the differences between her life stages. The child wears a simple collar inspired by typical kindergarten clothing, while the adolescent wears a hoodie that suggests her everyday school life. Finally, the adult wears a suit reflecting her transition into working life.

By changing these relatively small details while keeping the character recognizable, I wanted to show how hairstyle and clothing can communicate age, gender, personality, and stage of life without needing to rely on facial features alone.
