When I draw faces (or pretty much anything), I always think in terms of a 3D object. Think about the face of your character, and rotate them in your mind. There's a lot of depth there right? You can see how their hair falls across their forehead or on the nape of their neck. It gives them volume!
I try to implement this mental version of my character into my work, and try to remember that their eyes, nose, and mouth aren't exactly flat against their face, they have shape! Remembering this can help you add more of a (for lack of a better work) tactile feel to your art. You can feel your character instead of just seeing them!
Remember to FEEL and not just SEE!
