My method starts with a simple base to establish the three-dimensional volume of the head. From there, I build the structure and use guide lines to understand the proportions of the face.
I then use the same construction to practice the head from the front, profile, and three-quarter views. Once the proportions and perspective feel right, I refine the shape of the face and add the facial features, such as the eyes, nose, and mouth, when I can clearly determine their placement.
This method helps me understand the head as a three-dimensional form and gives me a solid foundation for developing the face.
