This is more of a rendering tip for when you’re refining the painting in the final stages.

This is something I’ve learned from Rembrandt.

Contrast is not only about light and dark values. Edge contrast plays an equally important role in creating clarity and depth.

The balance between soft, blurry edges and sharp, defined edges helps separate forms and materials, makes light and shadow read more clearly, and naturally guides the viewer’s attention.

On the other hand, relying too much on a Soft Brush removes this variety. Forms become less defined, materials start to blend together, and the painting can feel flat and unnatural.

In the final rendering stage, it’s crucial to pay attention to the edges just as much as the values. A good balance of soft and hard edges can bring clarity, depth, and a more natural finish to the entire painting.
