I decided to portray the relationship between Zero and his bear, Null, as something warm, intimate, and deeply affectionate. I was inspired by the idea of a candle and a butterfly, but I changed the concept and gave it my own interpretation. In this version, Zero represents the candle, while Null takes on the role of the butterfly. Null is not literally a butterfly here; the concept is represented through their relationship. Null loves Zero so much that they are willing to embrace Zero in their candle form—not only to make sure Zero is not alone, but also to experience the warmth of the flame through a warm embrace. At the same time, Zero gives their warmth to Null. This mutual sacrifice shows the depth of their friendship and how much they care for each other. Zero and Null both understand that staying this close could hurt them. Zero slowly melts from the heat, while Null risks being burned by the flame. Yet they are willing to make that sacrifice for each other. Their bond is about giving warmth while also being willing to share the risks that come with it—a reflection of the friendship and devotion I wanted to capture in my artwork.
